How to begin

Learning to drive can seem difficult before you start. With practice, patience and the support of an approved driving instructor, you can become a safe and confident driver.

Steps to get your Learner Permit

1. Make sure you have a valid Maltese residence card and that you have been in Malta for more than 6 months.
2. Book and pass the theory test. You may call 21 22 71 90 or book online through the Theory Test Centre.
3. Complete the Learner Driving Permit application online:

4. Prepare a passport-style photo with a white background and a photo of your signature on white paper. You will need to upload both during the application.
5. Use e-ID if you have an e-ID username and password. Otherwise, enter your name, surname and email manually.
6. Swipe the orange arrow to the right and check your email for the Transport Malta verification code.
7. Log in here:
   Candidate Login
   Paste the code together with your residence card number.
8. Check your mobile number and SMS notification, then continue to the next step.
9. Select AVATAR MOTORING SCHOOL L642 and Ruben Farrugia, if available. If it does not appear, go back and forward again.
10. Select your category:
    A1 Motorcycle 125cc, not scooter
    B Cars
    B Auto Cars with automatic transmission only
11. Answer the medical questions correctly. Select “No” only if you do not have that medical condition. Check your address carefully and submit.
12. After submission, visit your personal GP to complete the doctor approval step.
13. Keep your original Maltese ID card or residence card with you for the theory test, lessons and practical test.

After your application is approved, speak to your instructor to start your lessons.
